Tips for when life gets overwhelming

Recently I had a bad day. I felt like I was useless, like everything I did was pointless. I felt at a loss with my social media content and fell into the trap of comparison. I felt like I couldn’t do much right and just became so overwhelmed that I just stopped. I malfunctioned, to put it bluntly. And it felt rubbish at the time. I cried into my pillow and curled myself up into a ball when I had some time alone. It was pretty shit, but after I had a nap, I felt better. I took the day to step away from work, study and social media content creation. I took time out, to rest my mind and body. That’s when it came to me. A little verse in my mind that I turned into a small spoken word piece on my instagram here. It read “Today, I thought the demons had won until I realised that they were just rerouting my path to a better one”. So, maybe bad days where we feel hopeless and break down is the universes way of helping us. Here’s my thoughts below.

See it as a sign to take a break

When overwhelm has hit us and truly KO’d our mind, body and soul, maybe it’s a sign to take a step back and rest. Whether it’s a short hibernation away from stresses, work and education (If these things are possible) or whether it’s a day to nap, have the longest candlelit bubble bath, a retreat, a day at the gym or just simply time to breathe and not have your head in the deep end of your email inbox, overwhelm can be the sign of us needing to rejuvenate. If we’re burnt out, how can we expect ourselves to function at our best? 

Let the struggle reroute your path

Sometimes we can take the opportunity to let our overwhelm and bad day, reroute our path to one that suits us better. Maybe where we are right now isn’t right for us, and this burnout is telling us that things need to change. Listen to your mind and body and see what has led to this struggle. Maybe realising the trigger can lead to some decisions to prevent, avoid or remove it, allowing your path to become clearer. 

Learn from the past

These downfalls we have can be huge lessons for us. After all, our lives are ours to live. Our mental and physical wellbeing is the most important thing within our journey, so if things are so bad that they are causing us to be rundown and impacted negatively, then we can learn that things need to change. We can realise that certain environments, people and work are the cause of our struggles, and learning these things is the start of new beginnings and really being there for yourself above all else. Previous overwhelm can also teach us how to care for ourselves better, to cushion our our next struggle and even how to prevent it from happening.
