How to buy yourself keepsake jewellery | Collaborative post

Most people think of keepsake jewelry as something that somebody else buys for you. However, there’s no reason that you can’t buy yourself something special to mark special memories. Choosing something beautiful for yourself gives you something to be proud of every time you look at it, with no connections to anyone else.

You could buy yourself jewelry to celebrate a big promotion, commemorate a loved one with necklaces for cremation ashes, or buy yourself something just because you think it’s beautiful.

What's your style?

What do kind of jewelry do you usually wear? Look at your jewelry and clothes. What would suit your taste and style?

What are your outfits like? Do you like classics or trend-led pieces? Do you want a piece of jewelry that will make a statement, or do you want something more subtle?

If you want something classic and simple, you could choose jewelry like a slim chain with a delicate pendant, plain stud earrings, or a classy ring with a single stone.

Do your research

If you’ve never owned much expensive jewelry and usually only wear costume jewelry, you will find it helpful to do a little research on the different options that you could choose so you understand what you’re spending your money on. For example, if you want to buy diamonds, learn what different cuts, carats, and settings look like.

What's your budget?

Be realistic about what you can afford to spend on your keepsake item. The jewelry that you buy should make you feel proud of what you did for yourself when you look at it, not panicked about the credit bill you’re still paying off. Save up rather than buying on credit so don’t accidentally gift yourself a stressful expense you can’t really afford.

Save money

If you don’t have much to spend, there are some ways that you can bring the costs down.

Choose a gemstone rather than a diamond. If you really want a diamond, scale down on the clarity or color of the diamond, but not the cut. The cut is what makes the stone look brilliant and reflective, so is worth spending more on.

Choosing a less classic shape of the stone can also save you a lot of money. Choose a more affordable metal like gold.

Shop for your jewelry during the quieter season. Never shop for jewelry near Christmas or Valentine’s Day, when demand and prices are higher. Spend plenty of time researching online to find the best prices.

If you buy diamonds, make sure they come with a certificate of authenticity so you know exactly what you’ve spent your money on. It’s also a smart idea to get expensive jewelry insured, in case of loss, theft, or damage.

Shop

When your research is finished, you can go shopping. You can buy jewelry online, but it’s a good idea to try things on in person first to get an idea of what suits you, and what you like. You can always try it on in-store and buy online later.

Thank you so much for reading. I hope you have more of an insight into keepsake jewellery now. Let me know in the comments what you think.

Stay wonderful!
