Let’s face it, cleaning isn’t for everyone. It’s not the typical hobby you’d claim, however it doesn’t have to be a chore either. Despite cleaning promoting a frustrating sigh at times, it can be made into fun task, or even a type of ritual you create to add to your routine and keep your surroundings clean.

I actually find that if I’m feeling overwhelmed and my mind is heavy and cluttered, decluttering and cleaning my surroundings helps me feel lighter. It’s almost like, when clearing clutter in your environment, you’re subconsciously clearing your minds clutter too. When things are in order in our homes or offices, it can help get ours minds in order too.

Something to listen to

For those who have the ability to hear and enjoy embracing that sense, it’s great to pop on your choice of music, podcast or audiobook. You may prefer to clean in silence, but if you’re the type to want some background noise to fill the room with extra energy, definitely consider creating an uplifting playlist, a relatable or funny podcast, or the audio version of your favourite book. You can create your podcast and music playlist on Spotify or on YouTube, and buy your audiobooks on Amazon if you fancy. If you’re into audiobooks, you could even sign up for Audible or start a free trial. I love popping on my Amazon Alexa and being able to change music and podcasts hands free!

Something to visually stimulate you

For those who prefer to pop something on the TV to visually fill your room, you could choose a tidying, cleaning or organising show to inspire and motivate your cleaning routine. For me, I used to organise my clothes whilst watching ‘Tidying up with Marie Kondo’ on Netflix, or even YouTubers like Kate Snooks and The Anna Edit. It’s almost like body doubling in a way and gives you a sense of ease and organisation. You could also pop on your favourite show too, perhaps whilst hoovering, polishing or tidying things away, maybe even when sorting the dreaded sock pile. Just don’t get too distracted by your favourite show!

For me, I will either use Youtube, Netflix or Prime Video to watch my favourite shows and videos.

Creating a list of tasks

I think in any give situation when it comes to organising things, making lists is one of the best things to do. For me, writing them in a notebook makes me more productive than when I write them on my laptop or phone. I have an everyday notebook where each day I write the date and my list of daily to-dos. I have goals to fulfil each week and use each day to break them down into manageable tasks. For this cleaning ritual, it’s good to set a day to do it, where it isn’t going to get in the way of work or other commitments. The Little Black book by Otegha Uwagba is incredible for inspiration and motivational tips. This is where I got my list ideas from. You can get this book in Kindle form, paperback or audiobook on Amazon.

Adding it into your routine

As I mentioned above, setting a day to have your cleaning ritual within your routine is a productive way forward! It will allow you time to get done what needs to be done and will feel much more fulfilling than just randomly trying to squeeze in odd, rushed cleaning and tidying jobs here and there on busy days. When you plan your cleaning routine, you can have everything you need ready and have a plan of action!

Wanting to be more sustainable? When you’ve cleared out your old clothes, sell them with Vinted or Vestiarre collective, or give them to charity. Bring it full circle by shopping preloved clothes, like on Preworn – A company selling great branded preloved clothing at great prices. Click below for up to 90% *T&C’s apply.

Thank you so much for reading. I hope this has helped you find your spark in incorporating cleaning and clearing into your life.

Stay wonderful!

I like having music playing in the background when I’m cleaning or organising, it makes the job a lot easier for me to complete then! x

I completely agree! It adds that bit of motivation and helps to romanticise something that may seem daunting or chore like! x
