MH awareness week: Social media effects on body image.

So, Social media ay? As technology grows and grows, we find ourselves hyping up the next best social media platform. Let’s be honest, it’s pretty incredible! We can access so many things from a single platform; communication with friends, family and even businesses. We all use social media for different things and in different ways, whether that be for logging your daily rants from the tube, uploading pictures as a way of storing them from your phone or just to pop on and have a nosey into peoples daily living hehe.

It has taken the world by storm and I have yet to meet someone who isn’t on atleast one platform in this generation, even the older adults are loving it! It can be used for so many positive things and really can create communities of all types. If we want to make positive change and need a petition for the government, it will be spread on the web and go viral within minutes; that’s crazy and awesome! But this isn’t all is it? because we often have the negative side of these platforms when the wrong types of people get there hands on a keyboard and access the wide web!

Providing you focus on the right people for you on the web, your experience should be positive and happy, however as a content creator, I know that we often focus more on the negative presence on our feeds and it can be damaging to our mental, emotional and physical health. As well as those users who purposely want to put others down, we also have our own minds to contend with when we start comparing ourselves to icons and media famous individuals due to society creating this ‘perfect’ idea of body image and lifestyle.

When I posted this on Instagram, people were praising me on how confident I am and how amazing the message I'm sending is, but on the other side of this picture I was a bundle of anxiety, nerves, self doubt and criticism. As I always say, there is so much more than meets the eye when seeing an image online. We want to show people our good days, not the days where we can't leave home because of how crippling our anxiety or body image disorder is. This is what people need to remember, reality is very different to a single image. we are all only human.

Do you know what I did when I saw this image? I almost cried, because I was picking out things that are wrong with my body. I was dreading putting it on social media for the fear of being ‘ugly’, ‘fat’, ‘not instagram worthy’ and ‘imperfect’.

Then I sat and looked again and readjusted my mind. I realised that I am my worst critic and if I can’t accept and love me for me, how can I expect anyone else to listen to me when I tell them they are beautiful.

When I posted this image online, friends, family and general public were amazed and were telling me how beautiful I look, how sexy & powerful I look and how mI have so much confidence! I had people say “How do you do it? I couldn’t” and I think, we wouldn’t usually ask the average size 6 model these questions. We have been made to feel invalid as society and have put a label on our bodies.

The wonderful web is becoming more adapted to body positivity and is certainly creating change within the beauty and fashion industry. We are seeing more realistic campaigns from world wide brands and the positive effect is immense!

But we still have some work to do!

Short and sweet for todays theme of

'Social media and the Effects on body image'.

I'd love to know your take on this topic!

We all need to remember that everyone behind their

screen, behind each picture, video or post may be

fighting their own battles.

Not everything is always as it seems and therefore

we must keep an open mind.

Be raw. Be you. Keep it real.

We are ALL beautiful.

"Why blend in when you were born to stand out?"

Stay wonderful,

Louna
