Wagamama | Food review

One of my favourite places to eat lately is Wagamama. I adore Japanese culture and the food overall and Wagamama have definitely upped their game when it comes to the vegan options. When I visited the restaurant around 4 years ago, they had rarely anything for those following a vegan lifestyle. I remember eating a vegan Katsu curry where the chicken was replaced with sweet potato. It was nice but nothing special, so when I revisited recently and saw they had an entire vegan menu, I was excited!

So, here are some of the options I have gone for over my last few visits.

Sticky vegan ribs and teriyaki vegan 'chicken’ ramen

So, I decided to try the ‘sticky ribs’ as a starter and they were scrumptious. What a delicious dish. They are moist, rich in flavour and the texture is lovely. Of course they aren’t like normal ribs on a bone, but the meat-like texture is really good. For my main course I went with the teriyaki vegan ‘chicken’ ramen which was honestly, mouth watering. It was delicious. Fragrant, rich, full of beautiful textures and a mix of vegetables, noodles and a lovely meat substitute, all pulled together in a gorgeous broth. I honestly enjoyed every mouth full and could’ve licked the bowl clean. I did have a vegan ‘egg’ just because of how fab it looked, but I can honestly say that the aesthetics are all it is for as the taste doesn’t add anything to the dish.

Raisukaree tofu

This curry is lovely. It’s beautifully fragrant yet creamy and has a lovely balance of heat, sweetness and richness. The tofu is spongy yet firm and the vegetables are soft with a bit of a crunch to add texture. It is accompanied by some sticky rice and honestly is a very pleasant dish overall. It’s definitely the kind of dish I’d recommend for someone staying safe and doesn’t fancy trying ramen and noodle dishes. This one is more like a simple curry.

shu’s shiok jackfruit

This was a light and refreshing dish but not one I personally would go for again. My mum actually had this and I tried some and although it was fragrant, refreshing and tasty, I wasn’t a fan of the texture of the jackfruit. It’s a nice dish overall but just not for me. It is fragrant saucy jackfruit pieces accompanied by horse radish, chillies, fresh veg and sticky rice.

Banana Katsu and vegan orange cake

For dessert we had banana katsu with vegan caramel ice cream and a chocolate orange slice. Both were absolutely scrumptious and I could them over and over again. Even the kids loved them!

Somehow I didn’t manage to get a picture of the chocolate orange cake, but honestly both desserts, the banana katsu and choc cake were absolutely delightful. They were rich, sweet and super tasty. A great way to finish a meal.

Thank you so much for reading. I hope you have enjoyed this review. Let me know if you have been to Wagamama and what you think!

Stay wonderful!

Great review! Wagamama’s vegan options have really improved. The sticky vegan ribs and teriyaki vegan ‘chicken’ ramen sound amazing.
